Our Heritage

Peranakan Chinese or Straits-born Chinese are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to British Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore) between the 15th and 17th centuries. The men are known as Babas, and the women are known as Nonyas. It is a unique culture, fusing Chinese, Malay, Indian and European elements indigenous to Malaysia and Singapore. The traditional clothes worn by the Nonyas consist of a Kebaya-- a traditional blouse normally made of sheer material-- and is worn with a batik Sarong, which is a tube of fabric wrapped around the waist as a skirt. The uniform designed by French haute couture designer for Singapore Airlines, worn by the flight stewardess (an iconic Singapore Girl) is inspired by the traditional Sarong Kebaya. In Heritage of Peranakan Singapore, we believe in inspiring people to appreciate this nostalgically unique culture. Browse our catalogue and acquire a piece of Singapore's history.
